Thirteen days into the Delhi High Court blast and compensation issues are still plaguing the injured persons at RML Hospital. Two of them have been claiming to have received very less money even though their injury is serious in nature. Officials are also looking into fake compensation claims, with several people going to the hospital to get their medico-legal case cards made.
37-year-old Nitin Mendlos has lost hearing completely from one ear, while the other ear functions 30 per cent. He sustained splinter injuries in both legs and was operated upon twice. Tarun Yadav (34) also sustained serious injuries in the September 7 explosion. Both are still in the RML and were offered Rs 10,000 as compensation. While Yadav accepted the money,Mendlos rejected it.
As per the announcements made by the Central and the state governments, the victims in critical condition were to be given Rs 1 lakh each from the Centre and the state as compensation.
I am not going to beg this government for more money, but the question is if a victim is still receiving critical care admitted in the hospital thirteen days after the blast and has already undergone two major operations,is the injury minor or major?
Yadav says,A day after my first operation,I was asked to leave the hospital. But,I developed a lot of pain in the night. After another x-ray was taken,a big nail was found stuck in my left thigh, Yadav said.
Police officials posted at RML have another issue to tackle,of fake claimants.
More and more people come everyday to get their MLCs made (the medico-legal case card). The MLC is what is needed to claim the compensation. We do consider the cases that sound genuine, but most of them are fake, said a police official posted at the RML Hospital police post.
Even though RML Hospitals additional medical superintendent Dr Anjan Prakash refused to comment on Mendlos and Yadavs cases, she said,There is no criteria laid down to differentiate between minor and major injuries in case of a bomb blast.
If the nature of your injuries leads to long-term disability and obstructs the normal course of life in future,it should be considered major. So it could be the nature of disability that could decide, Dr Prakash said.
