According to officials, the work on the 17-km priority section, Sahibabad to Duhai, is likely to be inaugurated next month. “Trial runs have been successfully done on the corridor and some final procedures of safety audit are pending, which is expected to be completed by the end of this month, following which the country’s first rapid service will be opened for the public,” said an NCRTC official.
Once the service comes into force, the travel time between Meerut and Delhi will take just 50 minutes instead of three hours. The train will run at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour.
The Rapidx train services will have six to eight coach cars with one dedicated for women and one for business class, and premium services. The business class coach will have a separate entry through AFC on the platform level. It will also have a dedicated train attendant for the convenience of commuters.
The Rapidx train attendant will be stationed in the Premium coach and will impart all the travel-related information to commuters. During the journey, the official will provide information regarding the use of safety equipment and those related to the journey. The person will especially assist and tend to the needs of the aged, sick, specially-abled and commuters in need.
Apart from this, the train attendant will also assist the train operator during operations. In case of emergency, the attendant will extend help to commuters in other coaches as well.
In case of a breakdown or other emergency, the train attendant shall operate the evacuation device fitted on the train as per the instructions of the train operator and assist the commuters to get out of the train by opening the side doors, said officials.
The first coach of the RAPIDX train will be a Premium coach. This coach will be equipped with many modern amenities, including cushioned reclining seats, mobile and laptop charging ports, luggage racks and magazine holders, among others.
The entire 82-km corridor till Meerut is expected to be completed by 2025.
