A 25-year-old newly-wed man and his 30-year-old brother were killed when the speakers of a home theatre received as a wedding gift exploded while they were trying to set it up at home in Chhattisgarh’s Kabirdham district Monday.

The incident took place in Chamari village near the Madhya Pradesh border which is said to be a Naxal-hit village.

The deceased, Hemendra Merawi ,25, a farmer, got married on March 31. The police said it was an arranged marriage and identified his spouse as a 22-year-old woman who is a homemaker.

Around 11.30 am, Merawi and his elder brother Rajkumar had opened the gift. “They plugged it in and switched it on and soon after, an explosion took place,” said Manisha Thakur, additional Superintendent of Kabirdham district.

The explosion killed Merawi on the spot. The impact of the explosion led to the roof of the house to collapse. It also damaged the wall, the police said.

Merawi succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. A one-and-half-year-old girl in the family suffered serious burn injuries and is admitted to a civil hospital in Kawardha for better treatment. Other family members escaped with minor injuries.

“We could smell barood (gunpowder) but the forensic team is here and they will ascertain what happened,” added Thakur.
