4 drown at Manchinabele dam

The natives of Naraganahalli village in Nagamangala had been living in Bangalore for the past few months.

A shampoo sachet left behind in an autorickshaw saved a 21-year-old from drowning at the Manchinabele dam near Tavarekere on Magadi Road Monday evening. His four friends were, however, not so lucky.

Dinesh, who witnessed his friends drown, was in shock Tuesday when a fire and emergency department team fished out the bodies of Mohan,Charan,Ashok and Raghu, all aged 20 to 21 years.

The natives of Naraganahalli village in Nagamangala had been living in Bangalore for the past few months. Mohan and Ashok were autorickshaw drivers, while the other two worked in private factories.

The police said the four and Dinesh went to the Manchinabele dam Monday afternoon for a Dussehra outing. The fun ended when the coracle they rode into the water lost balance.

Dinesh, who had doubled back to fetch shampoo from the auto for a bath, returned to find his friends a good distance into the dam and later saw them slip out of the coracle.

The police said the four were 40 metres inside the dam when they tried to rotate the coracle and lost balance.

Informed by locals, the Tavarekere police arrived at the scene Monday evening but were unable to find the bodies.

The bodies were recovered Tuesday morning.
