Tamil Nadu: State-run TASMAC outlets sold liquor worth Rs 468 crore on Deepavali weekend
Opposition parties including the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the BJP have been urging the government to implement total prohibition in the state.

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) Monday said its liquor outlets have registered a record sale of Rs 467.63 crore over the Deepavali weekend.
As per officials, liquor worth Rs 220.85 crore was sold on November 11 (Saturday). And on Deepavali (November 12), liquor sales worth Rs 246.78 crore were recorded across the state.
In terms of liquor sales, Madurai topped the regions followed by Chennai and Tiruchirappalli.
On November 11, Madurai recorded liquor sales worth Rs 52.73 crore, followed by Chennai (Rs 48.12 crore), Coimbatore (Rs 40.20 crore), Tiruchirappalli (Rs 40.02 crore), and Salem (Rs 39.78 crore).
On Sunday, Tiruchirappalli recorded the highest sale of Rs 55.60 crore. It was followed by Chennai (Rs 52.98 crore), Madurai (Rs 51.97 crore), Salem (Rs 46.62 crore) and Coimbatore (Rs 39.61 crore).

During the last budget session, the state government noted that TASMAC sold liquor worth Rs 44,098.56 crore in 2022-23 compared to Rs 36,050.65 crore in the previous financial year.
The DMK government, as part of its poll promise to shut down TASMAC shops in a phased manner, closed 500 such outlets this June.
