School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi gave away free schoolbags and books to students. (Twitter/@Anbil_Mahesh) Schools across Tamil Nadu reopened for classes 6 to 12 on Monday after a brief summer vacation. Owing to the extreme temperature in several districts, the state government had postponed the reopening of schools earlier this month.
In several schools, students were welcomed by their teachers and other staff members with flowers and chocolates. They were provided books, notebooks, bags and other school supplies on the reopening day.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi extended his wishes to the students and teachers ahead of the beginning of the academic year. He inspected a school in the city and inquired about the facilites in place for the students.
Addressing reporters after visiting a government higher secondary school for girls in Virugambakkam, Anbil Mahesh said a total of 16,108 middle schools, high schools and higher secondary government schools and close to 12,000 private schools were reopened on Monday.

“My hearty wishes to all the students, teachers and other officials of the education department. I hope from day one, they will strive towards achieving a higher pass percentage than last academic year,” he said.
Commenting on the facilities made available for the students, the minister said he inspected the schools and directed the school authorities to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which includes ensuring the restrooms are hygienic, there drinking water for students, and the overhead water tanks are covered properly, among others.
He also said that students can travel for free in buses in uniform and the government will start the process to issue bus passes soon.
