Chennai Rains Highlights: Schools in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry shut as heavy rain lashes region

As heavy rain continued to lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, schools in multiple areas of the region have been shut. Puducherry Education Minister Namachivayam announced the closure of all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal on Friday. Similarly, Madurai District Collector M C Sangeetha has declared a holiday for all schools in the district on Friday, citing the persistent downpour.

What is the current forecast? According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is likely to continue in several areas of Tamil Nadu, including Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Kanyakumari. In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy with light rain in some areas.

The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts in Tamil Nadu, signalling moderate to heavy rainfall in the region. The weather agency has forecasted that the rains will continue until December 16. ‘Yellow’ alert has been issued for parts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Kanyakumari districts of Tamilnadu due to the ongoing rain predictions.

On weather update, Deputy Director General of Meteorological Department, Balachandran said, "In the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu experienced significant rainfall with 72 places recording heavy rainfall and 4 places receiving very heavy rainfall...In the next 24 hours, the system is expected to move westward, leading to moderate rainfall across many areas. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely along the coastal regions from Thiruvallur to Kanyakumari, with extreme rainfall expected in Theni, Tirunelveli, and Tuticorin districts... fishermen are advised not to venture into the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and surrounding areas due to the adverse weather conditions over the next 48 hours."

On cyclone observations and progress, he said, "The system initially moved from the southeast to the northwest over Sri Lanka, causing heavy rainfall. As it approached Tamil Nadu, a slight northeastward shift in its trajectory allowed it to gain more energy, intensifying the system before landfall near Puducherry."

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by moderate rain with intense spells of heavy rain in districts such as Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Thiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu.

Light thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain are predicted over Ranipettai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

The expected impact includes waterlogging in some areas, slippery roads leading to traffic disruptions, and minor structural damage caused by unsecured objects due to strong winds.

Following heavy rainfall warning issued by the IMD, six NDRF teams have been alerted to swing into rescue and relief activity in case of emergency, the government said. It also urged the people in the low-lying areas in the state to remain vigilant and take appropriate action.

Overnight rains lashed Chennai and the neighbouring Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, besides Villupuram and some areas in the Cauvery delta region.

Authorities have declared a day's holiday for schools in districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore.

The regional weather office has forecast more spells of rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts in the state, besides the neighbouring union territory Puducherry.

An orange alert has been issued for parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe, while a yellow alert has been issued for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka amid rain predictions.

The minimum and maximum temperatures for Chennai are expected to be 24.68 degree Celsius and 27.61 degree Celsius, respectively, and the humidity in the city stood at 80 per cent.

The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall warning in Puducherry and Karaikal for December 14, 16 and 17. A moderate to heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The government of Tamil Nadu has ordered schools to be shut in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and other cities on Thursday owing to a heavy rainfall warning put out by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD has predicted that moderate to heavy rainfall will continue across multiple districts of Tamil Nadu for the next 24 hours. Owing to the heavy rainfall, schools have been closed in 11 cities — Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet and Tiruvallur.

IMD in its forecast issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall today. In its alert, the weather agency said that the rains in Tamil Nadu may continue till December 16.
