A DMK functionary was hacked to death by a five-member gang, reportedly due to previous enmity, in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpet district on Thursday.

According to the police, the deceased identified as Aramudhan was the DMK secretary of Kattankulathur Union (North) unit and deputy chairman of Kattankulathur Panchayat Union.

The police said that Aramudhan who was in his mid 50s was fatally attacked while he was on his way to inspect a bus shelter on the Vandalur-Walajabad Road which was to be inaugurated on Friday on the occasion of Chief Minister M K Stalin’s birthday.

As his car was nearing the area, a gang of men, who were hiding nearby, intercepted him around 7 pm and hurled petrol bombs into his vehicle. As Aramudhan tried to escape, the gang charged at him and attacked him with knives and sickles.

The passers-by alerted the police who rushed the bleeding DMK functionary to the Government Chromepet Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Tambaram City Police Commissioner A Amal Raj told indianexpress.com that five people, who belong to the same area of Aramudhan, were found to be involved in the incident. The police have launched a probe.
