Chennai corporation says officials who take action against stray cattle menace face threats

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Radhakrishnan said Wednesday that people were threatening corporation workers who take action against them for letting cattle loose on roads, and warned that stringent action would be initiated if their cattle injured someone.

“When we go for a raid in the morning, they (cattle owners) threaten us in a group. Stringent action will be initiated if their cattle injure someone. The cattle behaviour will be different if they are on the road. Moreover, being on the road will affect the health of the cattle themselves as they will eat whatever is available. Cattle owners should ensure the animal is taken good care of,” Radhakrishnan said.

With injuries due to cattle attacks on the rise in the city, the corporation has been issuing penalties for owners who let their cattle roam around roads. Officials have also impounded such cattle and taken them to shelters if their owners are found violating the civic body’s orders on multiple occasions.

In a series of videos, Radhakrishnan said the officials in a group had been visiting the city and that with police help, they had found around 1,1986 cattle let loose on the streets around Pulianthope, Kolathur, Koyambedu, Triplicane, Kilpauk, Adyar, T Nagar and St Thomas Mount, among other areas.

The commissioner said the cattle owners tie up the animals when the officials reach their area for inspection, and let them loose on the streets later. He requested the public to cooperate with the officials rather than encouraging illegal behavior by feeding stray cattle.
