The construction of a multi-level parking lot proposed to come up in Sector 17 would not start till the beginning of next year,at least. According to the status report submitted in the MC House, electric cables were found at the site and the process of shifting them would not end before December 31.

The issue of removing the cables was tabled in the House on September 29 last year.

While the agenda stated that Rs 1.42 crores would be spent, objections were raised by councillors and Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal.

Finally Rs 1.22 crore was deposited with the Administration.

The work for removing the cables was started around two months ago.

An official of the MC said the task of shifting the cables was a tedious one and would take time.

The proposal for the multi-level parking lot was mooted three years ago. Since then, the project hangs fire.

Owing to the increase in the number of vehicles, the parking lot would have a capacity of 1,200 cars. As the project is being made under the public-private model, some area has been allocated for commercial activity as well.

With Sector 17 being the commercial hub of the city, the volume of vehicles in the area is huge.

Another multi-level parking lot was approved for the sector in the House meet held last month which was given a thumbs-down by councillors as they felt that if space was given for commercial activity, less parking space would be available to residents.
