Women self-help groups take up new posts

The administrator has started a slew of projects,right from getting a driving licence and registration certificates delivered by them to making jute bags and prasad at Mansa Devi temple. The main focus of all these projects is women. In a first of its kind,the administration has roped in self-help groups to deliver driving licence and RC door-to-door and they also getting paid for the same. A woman gets anything between Rs 7 to Rs 10 for each packet. The task of handing over documents in villages too has been given to them. The administration feels that apart from helping these women earn money,the project has also ensured that the documents are handed in safe hands.

“Earlier,these documents were sent either through courier or speed post and chances of these getting misplaced were high. These women ensure that the documents remain with them till handed over to the person concerned as they are held accountable for the same. Almost 80 per cent of such documents are now being delivered by them,” said Ashima Garg. She added that the biggest advantage was that these women were earning and contributing their bit to the household along with being independent. The project was started in May.

Garg feels that though such women are not well-educated,simple tasks do come in handy to boost their confidence. Women from self-help groups are also working in Mansa Devi temple,preparing prasad and making bags of cloth,jute and paper. This,according to Garg,also ensures quality of products as the women take keen interest in choosing raw material.
