Without councillor,ward awaits change

Now that elections have been announced to elect a new councillor, the residents of Ward Number 10 are hopeful that broken roads and dumped construction waste — this is what dots the area today — will soon be a thing of the past.

Now that elections have been announced to elect a new councillor, the residents of Ward Number 10 are hopeful that broken roads and dumped construction waste — this is what dots the area today — will soon be a thing of the past.

The ward, comprising Sectors 41,42,Buterla and Attawa,is crying out for basic amenities. A pothole- riddled road in Sector 42,near the Hockey Stadium, has not come under the MC radar for the past year while the process of widening another road in Sector 41 has been pending for a year and a half.

Waterlogging is a common complaint of residents. “Our repeated requests to the authorities have not yielded results. It becomes difficult to commute after it rains,” said a resident.

The new lake in Sector 42 was expected to rival the mighty Sukhna but turned out to be a damp squib. Till date,it is plagued by seepage of water and water has to be filled in using tubewells. The Beant Singh Memorial, inaugurated a few months ago,has also fallen to the vagaries of time and neglect.

In the villages, residents complain of inadequate sewerage facilities and frequent power shutdowns. Jasbir Singh Bunty, who had contested the last elections, says: “The villages are neglected by the authorities, even basic infrastructure is not adequate here,” he says.
