Joining office today after assuming the charge of the UT SSP,Naunihal Singh said he would work for strengthening the Police Control Room Van and build faith of the public in the police force.
The SSP,who spent his first day meeting senior administration officials, said it would take time before he sets in and understands the functioning of the police. The policing in city is different from that of Punjab. It will take some time to understand the organisational structure and it will only be then that I can think of bringing about improvements in the present system, he said.
Recalling an incident that he had witnessed in city only two days before he assumed the charge,Singh said he was crossing the Sector 15/16 roundabout while coming from Mohali when he witnessed a girl on a scooter being chased by three men on a bike. The chase went on for a distance, but the girl never approached the PCR van stationed on the road, much to his surprise.
It was raining and the girl, who was drenched, was chased by three hooligans who were passing comments and following her. What surprised me was that the girl never approached the PCR van stationed right there and continued to drive even as she was visibly scared of the chase, said Naunihal adding that the personnel in the PCR too never came out to witness what was happening.
I was driving my car on Saturday and overtook their bike and then stopped to confront the youths when they ran away on seeing me and took another path. I then followed the girl to ensure that she reached her destination safely but was surprised that the people have no faith in the PCR of the police nor did the PCR takes an initiative, said Naunihal adding that strengthening the functioning of the PCR will be his first priority.
The SSP also said that he was honoured to be the SSP as the city is the best in the country.
