The story behind Ranbir Kapoor’s Sadda Haq look

More than anything else,it was the whole Rockstar look, the phases and experiences his character goes through, the many influences and intersections life brings him to that was important to filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. According to him,the protagonist,Janardhan aka Jordan,as essayed by Ranbir Kapoor, was a collector and keeper of memories,a drifter,a travelling soul in search of a true musical expression, and en route this journey, his entire personality goes through many changes. From little trinkets like beads, talismans, bands and headgear to the larger costumes like the Court Jester jacket, the military cap from the Czech Republic and the ‘Jordan bag’,every little piece he wore was a work of detail. Amidst all this, the one piece that had to be outstanding was the Rockstar’s call for personal freedom — Sadda Haq.

“After couple of visits to our store in Delhi,Ali approached me and asked us to design a tee shirt for Ranbir with Sadda Haq on it,” says the owner of a ‘Punjab’ themed store,1469. Within hours,Harinder Singh and his wife were out with a tee making a solid statement. In five different colours and assertive expressions, the Sadda Haq tees were then sent to Mumbai for a test run. “Ranbir even wore it on his birthday recently which was a pleasant surprise,” says Singh. A successful test run later, the tees are now available at all 1469 stores across the country, including the one in Chandigarh’s Sector 17. Not only this,Singh also designed a silk waistcoat,a belt and turban for Kapoor which he wore for his visit to the Golden Temple while promoting Rockstar. Ali and Nargis Fakrhi too were spotted wearing Singh’s designs. He also gave rockstar Jordan’s character the bag he carries in the film.

But this is not where the story ends. Well acquainted with Punjab,Ali asked Singh to plan a road trip across the state. “One that was rustic, earthy and would stop at local places and not five star properties,” Singh started the journey with Harmandir Sahib and proceeded to DAV College Amritsar,to Dharamendra in Sahenwal Ludhiana via all the dhabhas including Giani da Dhabha and Chungi De Kulche in Amritsar and Nawanshahar and finally Chandigarh. “En route,I brushed up my Punjabi for them,” smiles Singh. As he looks forward to their visit at his Delhi residence,Singh is busy packing ladoos for Kapoor,Fakrhi and the rest of the gang, and it’s from our very own Chandigarh’s Gobind Sweets in Sector 7.
