Beyond Self is the seventh annual show of WE,a group of 22 Indian contemporary women artists that explores individual visions. The group was established with nine painters in 2003 and has come a long way since then, says Sadhna Sangar, president, and a landscape artist. The show has 78 works on varied subjects and mediums. Though the exhibition was inaugurated on the eve of Womens Day,it is not based on the theme of womanhood, says Sangar. Working on a particular idea takes an artist away from self-expression, she adds.
Simrit Luthras work are part of her flower series, indicating the close relationship between flowers and human beings. Darpanjots theme is music and she paints flowing women forms with the flute. While Sonia Sharma portrays traditional Punjabi women in various moods,Kamal Sohals portraits also deal with young women. Anu Dheer draws attention to female foeticide with her paintings, while Navpreet paints women inside the home. The idea is to encourage artists to share their art and creativity with others, sums up Sangar.
The exhibition is on till March 10 at the Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16.
