With Diwali around the corner, veterinarians in the city have urged residents to follow certain guidelines to ensure the safety of their pets during the festive season.
As per the officials of the People For Animals (PFA),:
Do not try to make your dog used to the noise by insisting it faces the noise, they may never get used to the noise and you may be causing damage.
If your dog runs for its bed,a cupboard or under the bed, leave it there and allow it to follow its natural instinct which is to hide in a den or cave. Do not soothe and comfort a scared dog,it will only increase the problem. Instead,be cheerful and in control.
Take your dog out for plenty of active exercise an hour before the fireworks start and then home for a good filling meal. A tired and well fed dog will be far less anxious during the night. Make sure your dog is well identified in case of escape with a collar and tag.
Meanwhile, the ambulance services of PFA will be available on October 26 between 7 am and 4 pm and again on October 27 from 7 am onwards for 24 hours as per the routine. Dr Anil, from Government Pet Hospital,Panchkula said,Pets get stressed during Diwali due to noise of crackers. So they should be confined indoors. They should not be left alone especially in the evening when everyone outside are bursting crackers. The pets should not be fed with sweets and spicy food at all, that could be dangerous for them. Already, the hospital has seen extreme cases of stress in pets over the last two days.
