The delayed monsoons have caused the prices of vegetables to rise,burning a hole in the consumers pocket. Shortage in the supply of vegetables by nearly 20 per cent,as compared to last year,and an increased demand have resulted in a hike in the prices.
The price of peas has doubled from Rs 40 per kg until last month to Rs 80 and prices of items like cucumber,potatoes,lemon,ladyfinger and beans too have recorded an increase.
Capsicum prices have risen to Rs 25 from Rs 15 per kg last month. French beans are priced at Rs 30 per kg in comparison with Rs 15 last month. Potatoes are priced at Rs 15 per kg up from the earlier price of Rs 10 while onions are priced at Rs 20 per kg. Snake gourd (tori) is priced at Rs 30 per kg up from Rs 20 last month.
The delayed monsoons coupled with the intense heat have shot up the prices. Most of the farmers are not going to the fields in the day to fetch the crop and thus the total supply has been affected, said Brij Mohan,former president,Sabzi Mandi Arhati Association.
The prices of fruits have also risen owing to the pending monsoons.
Mangoes are priced between Rs 50 to 70 kg in retail,while litchi is priced at Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg.
Everything from vegetables to cereals is so costly,the monthly budget has gone haywire and it is becoming difficult to make ends meet in tough times of the economic slump, a consumer said.
