In view of the security issues in Punjab, the Chandigarh Administration has sounded an alert and imposed Section 144 of the CrPc and prohibited carrying of all kinds of weapons for one day.
According to the orders, the directive shall be effective from zero hours on March 20 till midnight of March 22. The Administration has earmarked only the Rally Ground, Sector 25, for protests and no other place is earmarked for the purpose.
“It has been made to appear to me that certain groups of people plan to organise processions rallies, dhamas, etc., and resort to other agitation methods in the city other than the earmarked designated place and whereas there is an apprehension that such groups/organizations/unions may cause obstruction, annoyance or injury to the persons lawfully employed or other general public and endanger human life and property, disturb public peace and tranquility and cause riots,” said Vinay Pratap Singh, District Magistrate, UT, in his order issued Sunday.
Further, he ordered prior permission for organising procession, rally, protest strike, making speeches, raising slogans, gathering assembly of five or more people for aforesaid purposes at Rally Ground, must be obtained.
The DM has prohibited as measure of emergency, the public generally or any member thereof from carrying of all kinds of fire arms, lethal weapons, lathies, spears and javelins, trishuls, swords, short swords, knuckles, knives and daggers, iron rods, etc., within the limits of Union Territory of Chandigarh.
In view of the security situation in Punjab, the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) has postponed the Jhankar fest that was scheduled to take place from March 20 to 22.
“Due to high alert and security reasons in Chandigarh and Punjab, all functions of Jhankar festival scheduled for March 20-22, 2023, are cancelled till further notice,” a notice issued in this regard from Dean Student Welfare, Panjab University, said.
The students’ council had decided to organise its annual cultural fest ‘Jhankar’ from March 20 to 22.
More than 50 colleges and universities from across the nation were expected to take part in the event.
Jhankar is being held on the PU campus since 1975. The fest will offer students an opportunity to explore and develop their skills in various academic, cultural and sports events.
This time, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann was expected to attend the event.
