UT achieves 100% status for provision

The UT Education Department has achieved 100 per cent status for provision of permanent toilets for both boys and girls in city schools.

The UT Education Department has achieved 100 per cent status for provision of permanent toilets for both boys and girls in city schools,if one goes by the administration’s affidavit submitted in the apex court last week.

Owing to the fact that a number of students, particularly girls, have been dropping out of schools due to lack of sanitation facilities and separate toilets, the Supreme Court had last year intervened in the infrastructural needs of schools.

The court had directed all states and UTs to set up permanent toilets in schools by March 31 this year, maintaining that “no excuses will be entertained beyond the date”.

Also,in response to the query raised from the Central government pertaining to basic facilities available in schools, the administration has made it clear that there is a provision of separate toilets for girls and boys in all city government schools (104),private unaided schools (69) and government-aided schools.

“We have ensured provision of permanent toilet facilities in all the schools. With regard to girls’ toilets,UT is way ahead of others,” DPI (schools) Sandeep Hans told Chandigarh Newsline.

About 96.43 per cent schools in Chandigarh have provision for separate toilets for girls. Going by a Ministry of Health survey, about 45 per cent of government-run schools lack facility of separate toilets for girls nationally.

Other than Chandigarh, the states holding the first six positions in terms of the facility in schools include Punjab (98.52),Himachal Pradesh (95) and Haryana (91) across the country,as per Education Development Index (EDI).
