Uppal booked under Excise Act

Amritsar police registered a case against SP Randhir Singh Uppal of Hoshiarpur under the Excise Act.

The Amritsar police on Tuesday registered a case against SP (Detective) Randhir Singh Uppal of Hoshiarpur — who was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Monday for accepting a bribe — under the Excise Act.

Following his arrest,in a raid conducted by the sleuths of the Vigilance Bureau’s Jalandhar wing,15 boxes of liquor, illegal arms and ammunitions, two AK-47s and one .38 pistol were recovered from Uppal’s residence in Amritsar — where his parents live.

“The Amritsar police will investigate how Uppal got these liquor boxes and why did he not take permission from the Excise department for the purpose. Moreover,as per rules, not more then 12 bottles can be kept by any one person,” an official said. The case has been lodged at the Amritsar Cantonment police station.

Meanwhile, the Hoshiarpur police has written to the excise department to take action against Uppal,as among the 24 boxes of liquor found at his official residence, while 11 were of Blender Pride brand, the others were of Black Dog,100 Pipers and Teacher’s. The police have registered a Daily Dairy Report (DDR) against Uppal and sent its details to the department.

Moreover, while Rs 50,000 was found from his house, another Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 were recovered from Uppal’s office.

The Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday produced Uppal before the special judge in Hoshiarpur court, who sent him to a three-day police remand. “We have written to the state government that we have arrested Uppal. Now,the home department will start proceedings to suspend him from the police department,” said an official.

Interestingly,Uppal had served as the SP (Economic Offences Wing) of the Vigilance Bureau in Amritsar for a year. Following complaints against him of “harassing” people,he was transferred to the Vigilance Bureau headquarters in Chandigarh. After a few months,he was transferred as SP (Detective) in Hoshiarpur, said a source.
