The political activity in the run up to the elections to the Municipal Corporation was visible in the proceedings of the House with tussles witnessed over a number of issues.

BJP condemned the manner in which the proceedings were conducted during the last meeting of the House. Agenda items were passed without being discussed amidst ruckus in the House. Councillor Harjinder Kaur raised the issue. Following this Congress brought in a resolution proposed by councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma “condemning the attitude of BJP towards development”. This was approved by the Congress councillors.

Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh then announced that all the development agenda items passed in the meeting last month would be considered cancelled and taken up during the next meeting. BJP-Akali Dal councillors created a ruckus alleging that the Congress was trying to create a wrong impression.

Another bone of contention arose after Harjinder Kaur alleged that Additional Commissioner-II spoke rudely to her in the office of the Municipal Commissioner a few days back. She said that dignity of the councillors was lowered by such behaviour. As she asked the two councillors Bhupinder Singh Badheri and Chander Mukhi Sharma who were also in the room to support her statement, both of them rejected the allegation. This further led to a ruckus with allegations being traded.

A spat was witnessed between Anu Chatrath and Harjinder Kaur. The two traded personal allegations in the House blaming each other for projects that were in the midst of controversy including the Garbage Processing Plant and the mechanised sweeping machines.

Questions were raised about the visit of the Congress councillors to Raj Bhawan. The councillors demanded that councillors of other parties should also have been taken along. They demanded to know how nominated councillor Arshad Khan could accompany the group if only Congress councillors were to visit.

The agenda for outsourcing organisation of Teej Festival was opposed by Harjinder Kaur. However,K S Chandpuri said that when the marathon was held in April this year it was completely mismanaged. If another function is to be held it should be outsourced.
