Two-day conclave concludes at PGI

The PGI-AIIMS conference on endoscopy was attended by more than 250 delegates from across the country. On the second day of the endoscopy course at PGIMER,Dr Naresh Bhat,Chairman of Gastroenterology,Columbia Asia Hospital,Bangalore,discussed the methods of performing a successful colonoscopy.

Dr S Nijahwan from Jaipur gave a video lecture on how the polyps of the colon could be removed. He demonstrated the technique of removing difficult and large polyps by doing piecemeal polypectomy. He has devised an indigenous basket which can be passed through the colonoscope to remove the polyps left after polypectomy.

Prof R Kochhar,Organising Secretary of the course and President of Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India,gave a talk on management of strictures of the esophagus,stomach and colon. He said ingestion of acids for suicidal intention is a very common cause of strictures of esophagus and stomach. He showed videos on the new technique of balloon dilatation of acid induced gastric outlet obstruction which he claimed can be successfully done even in sub- acute phase. He said surgery could be avoided in over 90 per cent of the patients with this technique. He also described the use of endoscopic injection of steroids into the strictures which are difficult to dilate endoscopically. He has pioneered this technique which has become very popular and is widely acclaimed.

Dr Pramod Garg from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi gave a lecture on the Management of Biliary Strictures. He said a majority of the benign strictures can be managed endoscopically by placement of multiple stents.

Dr Randhir Sud,a Padam Shree and the Chairman of Gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi demonstrated the endoscopic technique treating obesity.
