With the arrest of two youths from Sector 33 on Tuesday morning, the Special Crime Investigation Cell of the UT police claimed to have solved five cases of motorcycle theft in the city. The accused were identified as Gurpreet Singh and Nitin Kumar, both aged around 20 and residents of Patiala.

The two, students of Avlon Institute of Civil Aviation in Sector 34,lived in a rented accommodation in Sector 20 A.

The duo apparently took to crime last month only and made off with several bikes parked in Sector 34. One of the recovered bikes was stolen from the Sector-8 market, said police.

On a tip-off,a team of the Special Crime Cell, headed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Sohan Lal,laid a check post on the road dividing Sectors 33 and 34 on Tuesday. The two were nabbed while riding a bike, which had a fake registration number and was reportedly stolen from Sector 34 last month.

On interrogation, the duo confessed to their involvement in the theft of four more motorcycles in the city. A Bajaj Caliber (CH03 F 2038),LML Freedom (PB 70 A 4252) and Bajaj Discover (CH03 W 235) were stolen from Sector 34 while a Honda Splendor (CH03 X 3789) was lifted from the Sector-8 market in August.

“The accused planned to sell these in the second-hand two-wheeler market,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Special Crime Cell) Satbir Singh. The two had also prepared forged registration certificates for the stolen bikes,he added.
