To the world,Europe may seem like one huge continent, but within it are 24 countries, and within these countries is a diversity of nationalites, class, caste, creed and religion. Consequently,a variety of gender issues exist within Europe. Starting today, the 18th European Film Festival will introduce the people of Chandigarh with some of these issues through 24 films from 24 countries.
The festival is being brought to the city by Chandigarh Film Society in association with Alliance Francaise,Chandigarh Tourism and PGI. It is on till July 7,and will host a film screening daily. This year, the theme is Celebrating Women, and the event will kickstart with Hungarian film Eszters Inheritance, which will be screened at PGIs Bhargava Auditorium,6 pm onwards. While PGI will screen films till June 30,Alliance Francaise (Sector 35) will take over on July 1 and 2,followed by Government Museum and Art gallery,Sector 10,from July 3 to 7.
The films throw light on women, their lives and loves, friendships and challenges. For instance,Fast Girls from UK is about young competing atheletes, while Your Name is Justine from Luxemborg shows the exploitation of innocent girls as sex workers. From Estonia is Graveyeard Keepers Daughter, about a litte girl who deals with her parents alcoholism and depression; from Cyprus comes Roads and Oranges, about two sisters whose father has been presumed dead since the Turkish forces invaded their country in 1974; from Sweden there is Beyond, about a dramatic childhood; while Polish film My Name is Ki deals with wishing for a life beyond being as single mum.
Generational clashes, war, recession or romance each will bring out different shades of women.
