Two bullet-proof Toyota land cruisers for Parkash Badal

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would soon be travelling in armoured Toyota Land Cruisers,an all terrain vehicle, two of which have been bought and sent for bulletproofing.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would soon be travelling in armoured Toyota Land Cruisers,an all terrain vehicle, two of which have been bought and sent for bulletproofing. The vehicles would cost upward of Rs 1.10 crore each.

“The vehicles have been handed over to the state police, which sent them to Ahmednagar in Maharastra for bulletproofing. After the bulletproofing work worth nearly Rs 30 lakh per vehicle, each SUV is expected to cost a little more than Rs 1.10 crore,’’ said an officer.

The move comes days after the Punjab Police, alarmed by the intelligence alerts on the security threat to CM and his Deputy Chief Minister son Sukhbir Singh Badal, decided to rope 50 personnel of Israel’s elite Special Security Group (SSG) to guard them.

The new vehicles have been bought as their bulletproofing is better and more effective against the attacks.

Sources said that at present Badals travel in a fleet of bullet-proof Mitsubishi Monteros. The CM has around eight Monteros, which were bought about two years ago. The bulletproofing was done by spending about Rs 22 lakh per vehicle. However, due to the heavy armour, the Monteros lost speed.

Before taking over as Deputy Chief Minister,Sukhbir had been travelling in his personal bulletproof Pajeros.

The state transport department has now replaced almost all the cars of all the ministers and chief parliamentary secretaries. The ministers have got new Toyota Camrys, while the chief parliamentary secretaries now travel in Toyota Altis cars. Also,MLAs have now got Toyota Innovas.
