A controversy had also erupted over foreign training of principals after Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit had questioned the selection criteria of the first batch alleging bias. Purohit had asked CM Bhagwant Mann to explain how teachers were selected for the tour.
Flagging off two batches Saturday from Chandigarh, Mann said that as per the guarantee given by the AAP to ensure quality education, these principals were being sent to Singapore. He said that over 90 per cent of them were visiting abroad for the first time, adding that their visit will prove to be a milestone in reforming the education sector.
Mann said that the motive was to ensure that students get world-class education in Punjab thereby enabling them to compete with their convent educated peers.
He said that government school students recently witnessed “spectacular events such as the launch of Chandrayaan 3 at ISRO”. He said that such steps were solely aimed at reversing the trend of brain drain in the state and channelise the unbounded energy of youth in a positive direction.
Mann said that during training, these principals will be equipped with modern teaching practices prevalent abroad. He said that after their return they will share the practices with students and their colleagues thereby ensuring that students get acquainted with the study pattern in foreign countries. Mann said that this will enable the students of the state to compete with their peers educated abroad.
He said that the first batch of teachers had gone to Singapore for training in February and the second batch had visited in March. He said that after their five-day training, the third and fourth batch will return on July 29. Mann said that online applications were sought from teachers for training and their selection has been made on the basis of merit.
He said that the state government is soon opening eight hi-tech centres for imparting training to the students for competitive exams, which will provide quality training to youth for clearing the UPSC exams.
