To tackle the stench emanating from the garbage dumping ground in Dadumajra, the Municipal Corporation has now decided to undertake a plantation drive in the area. The MC expects plants would ensure that the foul smell does not spread to the entire area. And it would also help in keeping the area clean.
The dumping ground has been a problem for the residents of Dadumajra and adjoining areas for the past many years. The waste management plant set up to check the menace of littering and the stench has not proved of much help either.
Mayor Kamlesh says,For the past many years, residents have been suffering due to the dumping grounds location. It has led to spread of diseases and other long-term health problems. With the dumping ground being cleaned and beautified with trees,we hope to solve the problem to a large extent.
In its annual budget, the civic body has allocated Rs 2.85 crore for maintenance of the dumping ground. This includes the cost of equipment for landfill, soil for spreading on garbage, capping and closing of dumping site and deploying security guards on contract basis. The garbage is also treated with lime, insecticides, pesticides and EM solution.
The garbage is processed at the plant set up near the dumping ground, but there have been observations that the process is not of as much help as it should be. Hence, inerts remain. During checks by councillors and officials over a period of time,it was seen that the quantity of inerts was more than expected and semi-processed garbage was filling up the dumping ground. Now,the trees have been thought of as an effective measure to solve the long-standing problem.
