The producer of ‘Udaipur Files’, Amit Jani, alleged he received an extortion call demanding Rs 5 crore from a purported Khalistani operative, sources told The Indian Express.
According to a police officer involved in the case, Jani received a WhatsApp call from an Armenian mobile number around 10 pm on Tuesday. He was then sent a voice note, the officer said.
In the purported voice note, a man is allegedly heard saying that he is a Khalistani operative. “I asked you for Rs 5 crore. You didn’t give. But now you have money to make a movie on Lawrence Bishnoi,” the caller could be heard purportedly saying.
Sources said in his complaint filed at the Malviya Nagar police station, Jani claimed he was being targeted by an ‘anti-Bishnoi’ gang over his upcoming film ‘Kala Hiran’, which traces the lead up to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s death threat to Bollywood actor Salman Khan after the latter killed a black buck. The animal holds cultural importance for the Bishnoi community.
Jani was earlier granted Y category CRPF security cover by the Ministry of Home Affairs after he received similar threats following the release of Udaipur Files in July.
The producer alleged in his complaint, “I was returning back to my Noida home after visiting a temple in Chattarpur when I received a call from this number. He [the caller] then sent me a voice note, saying that he will kill the CRPF personnel guarding me as well. As per Haryana Police, I am on the target of Himanshu Bhau and Kaushal Chaudhary. I think this man [the caller] is associated with them.”
A police officer said they have received Jani’s complaint and are investigating the matter. A case will be registered at Malviya Nagar police station.
