A day after gunshots were fired on the Panjab University campus and with PUSU leaders Simranjit Singh Dhillon and Gurjit Singh under arrest, rival parties seem to be making the most of the absence of the opposition bigwigs.

Though SOPU has not yet announced its candidates but their supporters were present in large numbers during a rally on Wednesday.

The party is actively working to woo prospective voters from departments which are considered as major vote banks including UIET,UIAMS,Department of Law and Chemical Engineering and Technology department.

While SOPU members were busy in the rally,PUSU supporters remained conspicuous by their absence and could be seen only in the afternoon when a handful of them approached the V-C office to submit a memorandum that their leaders are being framed.

Meanwhile, other parties such as INSO and NSUI have already declared their presidential candidates and are also campaigning in full force.

Talking to Newsline,Geeta who is contesting for the post of president from NSUI,said: “We condemn the violence in the university and if given a chance to become the president,I will work towards the development of PU and promoting peace.”

Security has also been tightened in UIET and the university campus. All vehicles without stickers are checked before being allowed in the campus. Wardens have also been directed to carry out surprise checks in the hostels to ensure that no student is living there illegally.
