This time students less anxious about results, more about date

‘Earlier many students suffered depression, loss of appetite, sleeplessness and short temper; usually parents would call up for such problems; this year students are pretty relaxed’.

With the second year of the grading system introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and many students opting for the school-based evaluation system over the CBSE external board, there has been a shift in the nature of calls being received from the students by the nominated counsellors. While fewer calls related to stress and evaluation queries are being made by the students, they are dominated by curiosity of the date when the results would be announced by the Board.

Unlike in previous years, when the nominated counsellors were flanked by calls pertaining to anxiety among the students related to their marks, compartment and fail, this year, with the changes implemented in the evaluation system by the CBSE Board, they are answering majorly to the query on ‘when the result would be declared’.

“A pleasant change has been seen in the trend this year. The queries are mostly about the results and not about how to deal with the anxiety and depression. Earlier, many students would also end up in depression, loss of appetite, sleeplessness and short tempered. Usually, even the parents would call up for the same kinds of problems. But this year, students are pretty relaxed. Their major concern is when the result would be declared,” said Dr Rakesh Sachdeva, nominated counsellor of CBSE.

Asked about the percentage of this shift in the trend, she replied that it would be 80 per cent of results queries and the remaining about others.

Talking about the initiatives taken by the CBSE and the change in this trend, the Regional Officer R J Khanderao said,“It will not be wrong if we say that all the efforts taken by the Board with the aim of relieving the students from the anxiety about the Board exams and results are proving to be effective. Also, there has been sufficient awareness about Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system.”

Another counsellor,Madhu Bahl, added that,“By now, students are almost comfortable with the grading system, which was the major concern of the students. Now,apart from result queries, those who have opted for internal school based evaluation process would ask about the summative and formative assessments. Also,a few questions related to the admission criterion in Class XI are being asked by the students as well as their parents.”

Similar views are shared by the city school principals and teachers.

“For the last two weeks we are receiving calls and visited by students asking for when the results would be declared. Till previous years,at this time of the year before the results, students were seen anxious about the marks and not when it would be declared,” said Anujit Kaur, principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 16 (GMSSS-16).
