Looking for some soul music? Tune into Teen Taal

If you go knocking,you’ll find plenty of closeted musicians in this city. It’s amazing to witness the growing wave of talent Chandigarh has to offer,” musician Hari Singh took the opportunity and roped in two new talents for his latest musical outfit. After taking the city by storm with his lounge music with Sukhmani,the Electro Qawwali Project,and a new voice in the form of Jasleen at Purple Rice,Hari’s back with Teen Taal. The best part – it is nowhere close to rock,backstage junkies or headbanging rockers. “It’s a soul-stirring musical outfit which will thrive on live performances,” Hari introduces his team mates – 23-year-old Kanishk Lakhanpal and 21-year-old Sangram Malik. While Kanishk lends the voice,Sangram strums the six strings. So how did they meet? “Serendipity,” Hari smiles at the good luck ‘chance’. As he plays the music they’ve recorded for their live performances,Hari fills us in on how he wanted to try something different this time. Now that Teen Taal has been formed,the three will focus on two genres of music: A retro lounge feel mixed with chill out electronica to old Hindi and ghazals songs of ‘50s,‘60s and ‘70s and sufi sounds that are deep and energetic fused with hip hop,base and electronica. “I’ve even added pre-recorded sounds the tumbi and alghoza,” adds Hari who,along with Kanishk and Sangram will be playing every Wednesday at S-Lounge in Sector 26 and every weekend at Orchid Lounge in Sector 34.

“It’s not exactly about singing…it’s more about creating some soul-stirring compositions,” says Kanishk. A trained vocalist,he practises under his guru,Pradeep Sharma and has just done his Law too! While Sangram’s been strumming for four years now and tries out the flute sometimes,he’s also studying law. Law and music – how did the parents react? “Well,they’ ll come around,” the boys are sure. “You’ve got one life,so why not take time out and do something that really defines you,gives you peace,” feels Hari,enjoying ‘talent managment’,making new sounds,composing and ideating. He’s infact even coming up with a website soon. “There is a lot of awareness now,and people are coming forward,” says Hari adding how the actual appreciation and feedback comes from live shows. “A live show will anyday give maximum exposure and music is like fire,it travels at the speed of light.” Teen Taal revving to go!
