Till a year back,if anyone was to quiz Bollwoods A-list designer Neeta Lulla on her favourite film project till date, her answer wouldve been Ashutosh Gowarikers period film,Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. The film based on the Chittagong uprising of the 1930s might have scored a dud on the box office, but Lullas work for the look of the characters,a result of many hours spent researching in libraries of London, did bring her acclaim. Now the designer admits that shes moved on to one of the biggest projects of her career Rajnikanths warrior film Rana, which also stars Deepika Padukone.
Jodhaa Akbar was my favourite mega project and then came Kheelein Hum Jeen Jaan Sey but now my hands are full with Rana, said Lulla, who was in the city for a workshop with students at the Inter-National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD).
Rana is fantasy period film set in 14th century India. The film is still at a nascent stage and I cant talk much about it. For now,I am just hoping for Rajni Sirs speedy recovery, said Lulla, talking about the actors kidney ailment. The actor was recently discharged from a Singapore hospital.
Lulla, who has worked on creating fabrics from zilch for the warrior-look to be essayed by Rajnikanth said,I find working on period films very challenging and exciting. For Rana,Ive mostly put together hand-woven fabrics and woollens,
Incidentally, shes also scouting for helping hands for the mega project. I am keen on taking on design students, who can intern with me on the sets. Sadly, most students fail to see that there are immense opportunities in the fashion industry beyond just designing collections, said Lulla, who emphasised on the need for super-specialisation in the the world of fashion.
Students need to explore fashion-related avenues such as media communications and marketing. It is essential for the fashion industrys growth, opined the designer, who herself has recently diversified into luxury lifestyle with a range of bridal luggage. Since bridal wear is essentially my forte,I am now keen on exploring luxury lifestyle products, informed Lulla.
Given how brides splurge on their trousseau,Lulla saw a potential market in luxury travel as well. So shes rolled out embroidered suitcases and totes that look as special as the ensembles they hold. Theres fine embroidery on the outside that is held together with special vinyl in glossy shades, said Lulla. For starters,it will be retailed in Mumbai and will be launched in other cities subsequently.
