Designer Wendell Rodricks presented the grand finale of the Blender’s Pride Fashion Tour 2011

Some of the leading names of Indian fashion came calling in the city this weekend, courtesy the Blender’s Pride Fashion Tour 2011. Showcasing the season’s new arrivals, over two evenings, were designers Raakesh Agarvwal,Rocky S,Mandira Wirk,Vikram Phadnis,Reynu Taandon and Wendell Rodricks.

Day one saw some starry presence, with Raima Sen walking for Vikram Phadnis,Vidya Malvade for Mandira Wirk and Ishaa Kopikkar for Raakesh Agarvwal. While the collection by Phadnis was subdued,Agarvwal brought in the seasonal bling, with a lot of embellishments. The shows, held at Hotel Mountview, began fashionably late, but to a full house. Rocky S impressed the nattily dressed audience with his collection that was all about red carpet dressing, not just for the ladies but men as well. The colour palette was strictly black, though there were a few deviations, like old rose. The minimalistic use of embellishments, with a very flowing silhouette, added to the collection’s charm. Also bringing in a fluid line of dresses was Mandira Wirk, inspired by the 16th and 18th century architecture. Her collection was characterised by decorative extravagance and curling scroll work.

If day one was all about glamour and opulence, the evening on day two ran high on colours and drapes. Designer Reynu Taandon showcased her Fall Winter 2011 Couture collection, which made the most of traditional Mughal motifs by using them on contemporary silhouettes. Taandon pointed out that the collection was primarily targeted at “independent and achiever brides”. So the models wore short achkans over crinkled silk anarkalis and the dupattas were mostly draped like scarves that had traditional gota work, which seems to have found favour with the designer this season.

The highlight, however, was the grand finale collection by Wendell Rodricks. Titled ‘Sorbet Splash’,the collection, once again, proved that when it comes to lounge wear, best worn on the sands of Goa,there’s no one who does it better than Rodricks. Comprising long maxi dresses with cut-away backs, the collection was zesty and the colours were sumptuous, almost like a heady Feni cocktail blended with lime, blue curacao and chilli tomato. It did everything to lighten up the two very sultry days.
