Youngsters shop for gadgets ahead of the first day at college

Going to college, till a few years ago, involved expenses like fees and pocket money for the college goer. From the parents’ perspective,it was easier on the pocket to shop for their child’s first day to college. That, however,is not the case any more as along with a fancy wardrobe,hi-tech gadgets too have become a part of “necessary” accessories.

“I cannot go to college without a notebook,” says Surbhi Sehgal, who’s set to join BA at Government College for Girls-11. Sehgal is looking for something that is stylish, light and high on utility. “Something like the MacBook,Sony Vaio or the latest series of Samsung laptops,” chips in friend Shalini Bhattacharya, who feels that the notebook will help them in projects and also take notes. Others may find it useful to access social networking sites and to surf the net.

Aastha Arora and Sucharu Vinayak are students of the Department of Chemical Engineering who are happy with the Apple iPhone. “It is the most capable,pocket-sized device that can be used to surf the Internet, listen to music, watch videos, capture interesting moments with pictures and videos,” they say. Most geeks look for gadgets that will fit into their pocket,“from PSP,Nintendos to cameras, with the choice shifting from macro to mini to nano,” says Amit Kohli, set to join the University Institute of Engineering and Technology this year. Most of these miniature marvels can be carried around without the knowledge of their teachers. “That is because gaming devices are not allowed in campus,” says a student of SD College, who owns a Play Station Portable.

The Optoma EP-PK-101 PICO Pocket Projector is another device that is much in demand. “Carry it in your pocket and show pictures and videos from your iPod,iPhone,iTouch,Camcorders,DV-Cams,DVD Players using a supplied composite AV out cable in a screen size of upto five feet. You can recharge it via USB or the included AC charger,” chirps Divyadeep Modi, who uses it for entertainment between classes and to access and show online lectures in the hostel.

If you are one of those who forgets faces easily, then Sony Cyber-shot is a must, says Aarti Bhatia,B.Com third year student of Guru Gobind Singh College,Sector 26. “This compact digital camera, which can shoot high definition pictures and high definition 720p videos, will help you remember who’s who. But to capture happy moments and college pranks,a camcorder is the best,” she adds. The complementary devices include compact Samsung Mini External HDDs and the pen drive. “Loaded with a secret zone that protects important files and data with a safetykey that ensures data is securely locked with a password protection,it makes sure that your secret is never revealed,” signs off Jupanjot, another final year student.
