Ever wondered how does it feel to be inside a spaceship? While getting into a real one is a tough task, one can now get a chance to experience it in an artificially simulated environment. Just head to the cinema hall in the neighbourhood. “This is called the 5D experience. One gets to be part of the live action on screen,” says Omkar Aulakh, managing director of Trick Surprise 5D Cinemas, who has brought the technology for the first time to the Tricity,at Big Cinemas,Paras Downtown,Zirakpur.

For the uninitiated,5D is the latest in cinema-viewing technology and makes 3D look outdated. As part of the 5D ride simulation shows, two films, rather two exciting rides, will be screened — Earth Quake and Strange, for the next month and a half,at Big Cinemas. “One has to be very careful about the length, breadth, height and the space available for such kind of cinema. The seats are placed accordingly and Big Cinemas was the only one in the Tricity that met our requirements,” says Aulakh, reasoning why he didn’t bring the technology to a multiplex in Chandigarh. Priced at Rs 150 per ticket, per show, the hall will have 24 imported chairs to facilitate the 5D effect. “Right now,we have animation films and these are a pull for kids,” says Aulakh.

About 5D,it’s basically 3D movies with perfectly synchronised 4D effects and motion programming, that provide a completely thrilling 5D experience. “The 4D special effects and 3D projections make monsters jump out, cars crash at breakneck speed, buildings collapse and dinosaurs seem closer than ever. This is combined with state-of-the-art sound effects and the 5D motion simulation leaves the audience gasping for more,” says Aulakh, who feels that the Punjabi audience like horror films. “I will bring in the spooks too,” he adds.

The ritual of wearing special glasses also helps build the excitement. When it comes to 5D,Aulakh says the screen ceases to be the only medium for entertainment. From the ceiling of the theatre to the walls and the seats, everything put together leads to a complete live experience — there is surround sound, motion seats and mist.

“Special effects like neck, back and leg tickler, air jet, water jet, seat vibrations, smoke, snowflakes, aroma, wind and rainstorms are also there,” he adds.

For now,the shows, running for educational and recreational purposes are targeted at all segments of the audience, especially those between the age of five and 15.
