From a time when winning entries of competitions lived and died on sheets of paper and transcended into nothing more than metal trophies in hand,this ones a welcome change a competition that promises to implement the winning entry into a real life school.
Organised under the aegis of Eurogroup,this national-level architectural design competition invites students of architecture to design a sustainable and eco-friendly primary school. The winning entry will be implemented to build schools in Punjab,starting with one in Badson Village,District Nabha, said Pradeep Bhagat,principal of Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA) as he lay down the blueprint for the contest the entry should be a testimonial for energy-efficient design and use low-cost sustainable material. And a team may comprise a maximum number of four students.
Also of utmost importance is the climate compatibly of the design. The need of the hour is to develop design solutions that are environment friendly and which can reciprocate to regional and local conditions. This competition instigates students to think green and provides a platform to students to put across their designs, said Bhagat.
Depending on feasibility of the first school,the design will be replicated and if necessary improvised to form a chain of schools in the Punjab region.
Speaking about the emergence of the design competition,Bhagat said,Primary schools have generally simple programmatic requirements and allow for tremendous creativity within the design solution. The challenge comes in making a building that functions in the simplest way possible for young minds of children,provide a modern workplace for teachers and staff and promotes a spirit of community, he explained.
The contest is being organised as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the college and the last date of submitting the design is May 16. Those interested can log on to ecofriendlyschools.org.
