On the first day of admissions to government and private colleges, commerce was a big hit, with almost all colleges closing admissions to the BCom course. SD College remained the most preferred, followed by MCMDAV and DAV College.
Even as the admission process went off smoothly, students and parents appeared hassled. They complained of confusion in absence of a centralised admission system. Most students had to shuttle between different colleges.
Ive got through both MCMDAV College and SD College on merit, but I dont know when my turn would come in either of the two, Nidhi,a student, said. It is a complete mess. If not a centralised admission system, the authorities could have at least arranged for a common venue.
Naresh Sharma, who was accompanying his son, said,Despite problems faced during admissions in previous years, the administration has failed to take any step. Year after year, students and their parents have to shuttle between colleges without being sure of which college they would get admission in. And when the merit lowers,a parent said, the situation gets more chaotic.
In absence of a centralised admission system,a student said, their parents or relatives should be allowed to get the admission done on their behalf. The current system of colleges carrying out independent admissions is being followed for years now.
Talking to Newsline,Prof A C Vaid, principal of SD College, said,Though most of the students know the college they would get admission into,a few have to face harassment, especially when the merit lowers. There have been talks of having centralised admissions, but nothing has been materialised so far.
