Negligence on part of authorities at a city government school resulted in an accident, which left a student injured.
A Class X student had a narrow escape when he fell from the first floor of Government Senior Secondary School,Dhanas and fractured his right arm. The incident occurred around 9 am when Jaspreet Singh bent to pick up something that had fallen out of a grill-less window. He stood on the narrow window sill, but somehow lost balance and fell in the playground. He lost consciousness on hitting the ground, and others in the class raised an alarm, rousing the school authorities to prompt action. When asked, the student said he had bent to pick up a flower that had fallen on the window sill outside the classroom; but he also said that he felt dizzy and lost his balance. Nothing is clear at the moment. The school authorities would inquire into the matter when he returns to the school. At present,he is completely fine, said school principal Anita Lekhi.
Jaspreet was rushed to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital-16 where he was administered first aid and then taken for further treatment. He has fractured his right wrist. So far,his parents have not lodged any complaint against the school authorities.
It is to be noted that none of the classroom windows on the entire first floor of the two-storied school building have grills. Only yesterday, the school authorities were discussing safety of the students at stake in the absence of window grills. We have already intimated the education department about the safety lapse. Recently, the school has received permission for installing grills on all the school windows, added the principal.
Most govt schools unsafe
It is to be noted that none of the old government schools in the city have grilled windows in the classrooms. Irrespective of the number of floors these school buildings have, all have windows without wooden or iron grills. Also, the classroom windows are big enough for a Class X student to slip out easily.
Officialspeak
Accepting the fact that old government schools do not have window grills,District Education Officer Chanchal Singh said,The newly built schools do have grills in the classroom windows, not the old ones. When asked about the steps to be taken by the department to avoid similar incidents in the future,he replied that at the moment, the department had no such action plan.
