At its monthly Baithak programme,Pracheen Kala Kendra played host to a dance recital by Delhi-based Kathak exponent Harish Gangani and his disciple Tanushri Roy,who mesmerised the city audience with their kathak jugalbandi at Punjab Kala Bhavan. Son of kathak maestro Pandit Kundanlal Gangani,Harish comes from the Jaipur gharana of kathak dancers,known for their complex and powerful footwork.
Personable,energetic and thorough in his understanding of the technique,Harish teaches at Kathak Kendras South Centre in New Delhi. With a natural talent,Roys impeccable rhythm sense represented the soul of kathak on stage beautifully.
The artist duo opened their recital with a Shiv Stuti. Based in Raga Bhatiyar,the stuti paying obeisance to Lord Shiva was presented in an exemplary abhinaya ang,with punctuation with jaties typical of kathak in the kirtana part and with some delicate foot work. Gangani demonstrated his skill and virtuosity through intricate movements executed with remarkable ease and confidence. Roy beautifully danced to the lyrics Chhaila roke dagariya tharo,displaying her command over abhinaya . The programme concluded with a sargam jugalbandi between dance,ghungroo and tabla in drut laya. The duo was accompanied by Mohit Gangani on tabla,Aashish Gangani on pakhawaj,Ghulam Mohammad on sarangi and Faraz Ahmed on vocals.
