State DGP under EC scanner

Chief Electoral Officer Kusumjit Sidhu ordered the DC to keep an eye on the weekend sangat darshan programmes held by state DGP Paramdip Singh Gill.

Aspirants from SAD(B) and Congress for tickets to the 2012 Assembly elections from Moga are breathing easy after Chief Electoral Officer Kusumjit Sidhu ordered the DC to keep an eye on the weekend sangat darshan programmes held by state DGP Paramdip Singh Gill.

Gill, one of the main candidates from the area, will contest on a SAD(B) ticket. So,while local Congress leaders have been crying hoarse all along alleging that the DGP was using his position to consolidate his power in the area, local Akali leaders too were not very happy with the parachuted candidate.

After local Akali leader Davinder Singh Raniya expressed his objections against Gill,it is now the turn of the Congress leaders. Vijay Sathi,a member of the state working committee of the Congress, and former MLA,said: “The Election Commission should announce the polls as soon as possible so that officers like Gill can be removed from their posts. The Commission should also take notice of the fact that the CM is going around the state doling out cash with an eye on the elections.”

A close aide of senior leader and a member of the Central Working Committee,Jagmeet Singh Brar,Sathi, said: “Very soon,a party delegation will meet the chief election commissioner to apprise him of the prevailing situation and ‘political’ activities of both Gill and D S Guru, the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister,in their respective districts.”

Meanwhile, for the people of Moga, visits by Gill are common. Along with his cousin Micky,Gill has been holding parallel meetings in the area. However, the DGP himself has always downplayed the situation when asked whether he will contest the elections.

It cannot be denied that thanks to the legacy of his late father MLA Nachhattar Singh Gill, who was killed during the years of militancy in Punjab,Gill does enjoy a clout in the area. The DGP’s father, however was a Congress candidate.
