The Haryana government appointed hockey player Surinder Kaur and mountaineer Mamta Sodha as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) under sports quota on Wednesday.

The Haryana government appointed hockey player Surinder Kaur and mountaineer Mamta Sodha as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) under sports quota on Wednesday. Surinder Kaur,who hails from Shahabad Markanda in Kurukshetra district,has been appointed as DSP in recognition of her achievements at national and international levels and ‘for being a source of motivation for young sportspersons.’ The state Cabinet,which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,decided to relax rules by taking one post of Deputy Superintendent of Police out of the purview of the Haryana Public Service Commission and giving relaxation in her upper age limit against the said post. The Cabinet also decided to appoint Constable Geeta as Sub Inspector under sports quota. She has won a number of medals in the various state,national and international level games and championships in yoga and made the state and Haryana Police proud. Mamta,who hails from district Kaithal,had recently scaled Mt Everest and brought laurels to the state and the country.

Kabaddi meet from tomorrow

The Inter Central Public Sector Undertaking Kabbadi Championship will be held from June 17 to 19 at Sector 42 stadium in Chandigarh. The inauguration of the tournament will be done by Chief Engineer (UT) at 5 pm on June 17. NHPC,Powergrid,BBMB and NPTC are taking part in the event.

Cricket trials tomorrow

Cricket Association of Chandigarh will hold trials for the selection of the Chandigarh team on June 17 at 3 pm at Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 40,for the 2nd All India National League Cricket Tournament to be held at Agra from June 22 to 25. Cricket tourney from today

PANCHKULA: Hansraj Cricket Academy,Panchkula (Red) will take on Chandigarh Baptist team in the inaugural match of the First Under-13 Cup League Cricket Tournament to be held at Hansraj Public School cricket ground,Sector 6,on June 16 at 3.30 pm. As many as four teams have confirmed their participation for the event to be held on league-cum-knock out basis.

Tough test ahead for Chandigarh

After their maiden entry into the 47th Junior National Under-17 Football Championship for Dr B C Roy Trophy,Chandigarh will look forward to extend their winning run when they take on Manipur in the quarter-final match on June 18,hoping to seal a semi-final berth with a win over the North-East powerhouse. However,Manipur gave a glimpse of what was to come for the Chandigarh team when they blanked Tamil Nadu 8-0 in their last Cluster VI match. In another match,Madhya Pradesh routed Himachal Pradesh 6-1. Holders Karnataka (Cluster I),Uttrakhand (Cluster IV),Goa (Cluster V) and Meghalaya (second best team) have been clubbed in Group A,while Orissa (Cluster II),Chandigarh (Cluster III),West Bengal (Cluster VII) and Manipur (Cluster VI) have been placed in group B. On Thursday,the first day of the quarter-final league programme,Karnataka will meet formidable Goa and Uttrakhand are pitted against Meghalaya.
