Amidist the entire controversy and speculation on Panjab University Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti’s chances of getting a second extension,a look at the Panjab University records of ten Vice Chancellors the University has revealed that many of them managed two extensions (three terms) and a total tenure of a decade.

Vice-Chancellors R C Paul and Suraj Bhan had a term of ten and nine years respectively. A C Joshi and Dewan Anand Kumar had a term of eight years each. T N Kapoor remained Vice Chancellor for seven years. Among these,M M Puri was said to retire from the post at an age of 70 in 2000. He took over the office from T N Kapoor in 1997.

While those who served for three terms included Suraj Bhan,R C Paul and R P Bhamba, though Bhamba did not complete his third term and gave up the charge in 1991. Suraj Bhan had a tenure from 1965 till 1974 while R C Paul from 1974 to 1984.

Sobti’s predecessor K N Pathak was V-C for six years from 2000 to 2006. When contacted,Sobti said,“It entirely depends upon the decision of MHRD and University Chancellor. It has nothing to do with the recent recommendation by the Syndicate and Senate for a change in PU Act as these are mere recommendations and not decisions.”

He further added that the proposal of extension in the retirement age of faculty members and V-C from 60 to 65 years and of increase in the extension tenure from three to five years were passed as there were allegations on this office (V-C) in the last Senate meeting that the same were not received by the MHRD in February this year.

Sobti’s term is going to end in May 2012. He is already on extension and speculations are on in the campus regarding whether he would manage to get a third term or not.
