Most of the special trains from Ferozepur to Hussainiwala were empty on Tuesday.
The special train from Ferozepur to Hussainiwala starts at 7.30 am and runs till 7.30 pm every year on March 23 for visitors to pay tributes to Bhagat Singh,Sukhdev and Rajguru on their martyrdom day. This year, however, the response was lukewarm. A senior official said,I am surprised to see the thin gathering. Earlier, the place used to be jam-packed. The crowd mostly consisted of villagers from Hussainiwala .
The political parties also failed to put up a show of strength usually seen in political rallies.
Deputy Speaker Sukhbir Badal, who was the chief guest on the occasion, delivered a speech, which was more about the achievements of the state government instead of paying tributes to the martyrs.
He blamed the Centre for all the failures and problems in the state. He said looking at the direction in which the country was heading,it seemed that the sacrifices of the freedom fighters had gone waste.
He also announced Rs 50 lakh grant for the beautification of the Hussainiwala Shaheedi Samarak, which lacks even the basic amenities.
The Deputy Chief Minister also honoured relatives of Bhagat SinghKiranjit Sandhu,Surinder Kaur,Manjit Kaur,Manjula Toor and Amrita. Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon and MP Sher Singh Ghubaya also spoke on the occasion.
