Special investigation cell edges out crime branch

As the Special Crime Investigation Cell hogged the limelight in 2009 by solving some important cases,the Crime Branch and Cyber Crime Investigation Cell did not find noteworthy mention in the achievements of specialised cells in the annual review report of Chandigarh Police released on Saturday.

Edging out the Crime Branch,the special crime investigation cell was apparently the saving grace of the police. It had to its credit the busting of a gang of highway robbers,solving the Sector-20 financier murder case with the arrest of notorious criminal Whiskey,and arrest of Baba Pritpal Singh,who had been evading arrest for more than six months,repeatedly bringing embarrassment to police in the court.

Notably,top police officials handed over investigations of infamous yet important cases to the special cell,given its track record in the year. The special cell was also successful in catching high-profile absconders like Congress councillor Devinder Singh Babla.
