Shiromani Akali Dal-backed student wing Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) swept the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) 2015 elections, with its Presidential candidate Jasmeen Kang winning by a margin of 1,436 votes. The remaining three posts of office-bearers were also won by SOI’s panel, which comprised Indian National Students Organisation (INSO), Himachal Students Union (HIMSU), National Students’ Organisation (NSO), Youth Organisation of India (YOI), Gandhi Group Students’ Union (GGSU) and YUWA.
The post of vice president was secured by Preeti Negi of HIMSU, with 3,777 votes. With 3,256 votes, Rishi Bhardwaj from NSO won the post of PUCSC’s Secretary, and Swati Tiwana from INSO won the post of joint secretary polling 3,077 votes.

Last year, the NSUI had managed to win three posts in the students’ council. NSUI’s presidential candidate managed to secure only 1,922 votes, whereas Panjab University Students Union’s (PUSU) main presidential candidate Baljinder Singh secured 2,295 votes.

The elections were held peacefully without any reported incidents of violence. On Wednesday, the university campus wore an anxious look, as supporters of all student organisations waited outside the Gymnasium Hall where the counting was done. As the counting of votes started around noon, SOI’s panel managed to take the lead, right from the beginning, assuring them of a sure-shot victory. The official results were declared by the PU authorities around 6 pm.

Soon after, members of SOI and its alliance parties celebrated their victory inside the PU campus as they danced to the beats of dhols and raised slogans in praise of their party as they coloured the campus orange with their party posters. Senior leaders of SOI Robin Brar, Meet Jatana, Vicky Middukhera and INSO’s National President Digvijaya Singh Chautala were also present on the campus, and joined in the celebrations.

Expressing his happiness, Digvijaya Singh Chautala said, “This is the beginning of a new era for Panjab University, this is a new era of change and student welfare. The rule of Congress is over at PU, and now we will make sure that we take this win to the Delhi University elections also, which are scheduled for September 11.” SOI’s Chandigarh President Vicky Middukhera added, “Our panel has swept the PU polls this year, and we have created history. All the hard work has finally paid off.”

On the day of the elections, no incidents of violence were reported anywhere on the Panjab University campus, and the entire process of voting and vote-counting was carried out smoothly. About 1300 police personnel deployed on the university campus throughout the day, and outsiders were strictly prohibited from entering the campus.

According to DSP Central Satish Kumar, “This year, the elections have been held quite peacefully, and I must appreciate the amount of efforts taken by the UT Police in ensuring complete security.” PU’s Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Professor Navdeep Goyal added, “I must thank the students for making sure that elections were carried out so smoothly this year and I congratulate the newly elected council on their victory.”
