Software engineer sent to police custody in dowry case

The court of chief judicial magistrate on Thursday remanded a software engineer to two days’ police remand in a dowry harassment case.

The court of chief judicial magistrate on Thursday remanded a software engineer to two days’ police remand in a dowry harassment case.

Sumit Singla,a resident of Sector 2,has been accused of allegedly torturing his wife,Bhawna Singla. An FIR in this regard was filed in the Sector-5 police station on April 22. Sumit works with an IT firm in Bangalore.

Sumit’s parents,Rajinder and Aarti Singla,were named by Bhawan in her complaint.

Bhawna’s father Rajesh Joshi said soon after the couple got married in 2006,the family started allegedly pushing her to get dowry.

“We had given them a car but our son-in-law kept insisting for property and a bigger car. Since we could not meet his demands,he started hitting my daughter. Later,the couple moved out of their parents’ house but their interference continued,” Joshi alleged.

Joshi said every time Sumit would hit his daughter,he would try to intervene.

“We warned him once but when he repeated the act in Bangalore,I brought my daughter back and filed a complaint against the family,” he said.

The couple has a few months old daughter.

A case under Sections 406 and 498-A has been registered against Sumit. No case has been registered against Sumit’s parents.
