Shops remained closed in Sector 17 till noon today with traders protesting the new provision of sealing of portions of buildings by the Estate Office without issuing any prior notice.

A large number of traders, led by Virender Guleria, president of the Sector-17 Progressive Trader Association, raised slogans and marched in the market while shutters were downed till the rally was over.

The shopowners later held a rally in the Plaza and were joined by members of the Property Dealers and Consultants’ Association.

President J D Gupta and other office-bearers promised full support to the aggrieved traders and the efforts of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal in getting the issue resolved were also sought. Guleria even threatened to call a complete Chandigarh Bandh if the demands of traders are not met. An executive meeting followed by the annual general meeting shall be convened to chalk out the future course of action,he added.

He also appealed to the Administration to lift the sealing and let traders use forms of judicial relief available, including voluntarily removing the violations.

Later in the afternoon,a delegation of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, headed by president Diwakar Sahoonja, called on the Finance Secretary to take up the matter. Temporary relief was provided for 25 days to the shopkeepers on the condition that an undertaking be given by them to remove the violations by then.
