THE request list was long and Punjabi Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans was only too happy to sing live for the residents of Nayagaon,a village on the outskirts of Chandigarh. “They have never heard me sing on the stage and this was my chance to reach out to a new audience,” remarked Hans, who visited Developing Indigenous Resources (DIR),an NGO working in Nayagaon since 2005,on Friday. A chance meeting with Dr Frederick Shaw, founder and CEO of DIR,brought Hans here. The NGO focuses on health,child-care and developing self-sustaining employment opportunities for men and women of the area. Shaw successfully ran the model in Pakistan and, with the singer’s support, hopes to replicate the model in Punjab. “Singing is an ibbadat,I have taken a break from professional singing and am loving the time at hand which I am devoting to community projects in Punjab,” said Hans, who is gearing up for the concert to be held in September this year.
