See a doctor before taking to treadmill

Though moderate exercise is very important for healthy life style,high-intensity exercise without doctors’ consultation can be harmful.

Vigorous exercise like running on a treadmill without doctors’ consultation can be life-threatening. The death of Panchkula CBI Special Magistrate Atul Marya,42,who died of cardiac arrest while he was running on a treadmill, has brought the issue of medical ignorance to the fore.

Though moderate exercise is very important for healthy life style,high-intensity exercise without doctors’ consultation can be harmful. City-based cardiologists advise people to consult a doctor before starting new exercise routine.

“Before starting vigorous exercise, one should consult a cardiologist and undergo complete medical check-up,” says a senior cardiovascular consultant from PGI.

Dr S Reddy,a cardiologist from PGI,stresses timely medical check-up. “Medical check-up before doing vigorous exercise is very important, especially for people who are above 35 years of age. It is equally important for smokers, people suffering from heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes,” he says. “I will not recommend higher-intensity exercise to any of my heart patients,as it leads to more pressure on heart and can be life-threatening.”

Those who are not sure about their health status,or have multiple health problems are advised to speak to their doctors first and then plan their exercise.

Dr Reddy says that it does not mean that people should stop exercising. “I will go for moderate exercise like jogging or brisk walking,as it is a safe option for people, rather than vigorous exercise like running on treadmill,” he adds.

Dr H K Bali,Cardiologist,Fortis Hospital, feels that even heart patients can use treadmill, but only after consulting their doctors. “People suffering from coronary disease should go for medical evaluation by doctors. It is very important that they are assessed by a doctor, who will further advise them the amount and intensity of exercise they should follow.”
