An intervention by a Chandigarh citizen on Friday led to the arrest of a purse snatcher riding pillion on a motorcycle. The citizen,Roopinder Singh,has in the past helped the Chandigarh police in nabbing four snatchers. The arrested Vikas Kumar,23,works as a munshi for a lawyer in High Court.

Around 10.40 am on Friday,Ashok Kumar and his brother were standing with his brother at a parking near the Municipal Corporation office. Ashok took out his wallet to hand over Rs 5,000 to his brother and kept the wallet inside the helmet hanging from the handle of the bike. While Ashok was talking to his brother,Vikas Kumar,riding pillion on a motorcycle,snatched Ashok’s helmet along with the wallet.

“I kept my wallet in the helmet and started counting the money before handing it over to my brother. During this time,a pillion rider snatched away my helmet as my back was facing my parked bike,” said Ashok.

Ashok had then chased Vikas on his bike. Meanwhile,a citizen driving his car noticed the bike whose registration number plate was folded. Suspecting foul play,Roopinder too started chasing Vikas and his accomplice. Roopinder and Ashok then chased the bike from Sector 17 to Sector 20,neither of them aware that they were chasing the same person.

However,due to traffic Roopinder lost track of the miscreants in Sector 20. He then drove to his destination in Sector 20,where he noticed the bike and gave chase again.

“I drove besides the bike and signalled the snatchers twice to stop,but they kept on driving,” said Roopinder.

To stop the snatchers,Roopinder finally banged his car from the left into the bike near Nirman Theatre in Sector 32.

“A recommendation will be send to the Inspector General of Police,UT to reward Roopinder for his goodwill,” said a police official.
